Drawing is where everything begins.

Before the paint, before the canvas, before any of it — there is the line. Charcoal, pencil, ink, pastel — each one a different conversation with the page, a different way of seeing and thinking and working something out. For me, drawing is not preparation. It is practice in the truest sense — a daily return to the most direct relationship between eye, hand and subject.

I am a prolific drawer. I draw constantly. Figures, faces, marine life, landscape — whatever is in front of me or pressing on my mind. Some works are intimate studies, others are finished pieces in their own right. All of them are honest in a way that only drawing can be. There is nowhere to hide on paper.

Works are available unframed — rolled carefully and posted — or mounted and posted flat. Each one is a direct and original piece of Dee Smart's ongoing practice.
