Commission a Portrait

“I don’t just paint likeness — I paint essence. The aim isn’t to flatter, but to reveal something real, brave, beautiful and lasting,”— Dee Smart

"I love painting people! People are my constant curiosity , my forever joy! Theres no better drama than a person and as an actor I believe I have an innate understanding of what makes a person tick. Even in just the eyes I paint."

How It Works

1. Enquiry Begin by reaching out through the contact form below. Tell Dee a little about who you'd like painted and what draws you to commissioning a portrait.

2. Consultation Dee will arrange a time to meet — in person or virtually — to explore your story, intentions and connection to the subject. This is where the emotional tone of the portrait begins to take shape.

3. Proposal You'll receive a considered proposal outlining pricing, dimensions, timeframe and materials. Dee works in oil and mixed media on canvas or panel. Framing and delivery can also be arranged.

4. Sitting Dee will need approximately half an hour of your time, dressed as you'd like to be painted. A professional photographer will capture your pose and expression at high resolution — the foundation from which Dee builds the work.

5. Creation Over the coming weeks, the portrait is layered, developed and refined in studio. You may receive a progress image mid-way, though many clients choose to experience the finished work with completely fresh eyes.

6. Delivery The completed portrait is presented with care — framed or ready for professional framing — accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a personal note about its making.
